Yearbook Editing
"Spell check yourself before you wreck yourself."
- SOMEONE WISE ONCE SAID
Being an editor isn't easy. My school's population always wavers at around 2,500, yet I have never had a staff of over 15 people. That gives us a ratio of about one staff member for every 167 students. If I were to calculate this ratio using staff members on whom I can confidently depend to get their work done, I would probably have a staff of less than five and a new ratio of 1:500.
In addition to constructing every spread's layout from scratch, I edit the content of every page. This includes copy editing multiple times over and adjusting photos and graphics accordingly.
I won't pretend that I know the AP Style Book front to back. But I am often the one who pulls it off the shelf, dusts of the cover, and reminds my staff that we don't ever write out the full month of "February."
